Design Developments

The development of a design means the creation of a concept until you achieve a style or outcome that you're happy with and will proceed with refining.

For the design of the augmented reality cards, user experience and user interface design (UX/UI) will play a large roll in the influence of the designs. Visual research which has already been undertaken, read about the research here and here, has given me a glimpse into UX/UI design and how to use the mobile screen and it's relatively small space to the maximum, but with a design that allows for message clarity for the user. Here you can see my exploration into the design for the cards using Adobe Illustrator.

Designing for a mobile screen has proved to be a larger challenge than first anticipated. The dimensions of the screen allow for only a certain amount of content and design elements which must be balanced carefully. This balance would normally be helped by a scrolling feature or the use of menus and other navigational functions when designing in a user experience or user interface context, however, with the augmented reality space, this will not be possible. Through the exploration and iteration of the designs, various elements are placed in different ways in an attempt to not only investigate what works well within the design but also in an attempt to find out what does not work well. This kind of testing allows me to gain a well-rounded view of the user interface and user experience space and familiarises my design skills to the mobile device dimensions and restrictions.

The designs feature collaborative materials from other members of our team for the module. The logo, which features on all of the cards was created by Ashleigh Dussie, MA Graphic Design, and the colour scheme was created by Karolina Noworolska, MA Interior Design. This collaboration has allowed me to focus on my specific requirements in order to create my desired augmented reality outcomes.

So far, I am pleased with the progress of the designs and thanks to feedback from the group, have a clear direction on how to move forward. The ideas that have spawned through the creation of the cards, such as Creator Cards that showcase a quote and image from each member of our team relating to their respective works enables for further collaboration within the group. Working together, these cards will be populated with content through the team members themselves. I believe that these designs, or at least the ones that will be taken to be refined further, will need to be tested within the selected augmented reality software for me to know how successful these designs truly are. This, of course, depends on the software I invest time in and use to create the final outcomes. How much of an influence will the software chosen have an impact on the designs and their formatting?

These concepts will continue to be refined and iterated throughout the course of the coming weeks alongside the testing of augmented reality software.
